A Dubai Commission: Refining a Series 1.5 Jaguar E-Type
Transported from Dubai, this Series 1.5 Jaguar E-Type came to the P&K Thornton workshops last year with a list of requests from our client to improve the E-Type’s usability in the hot climate conditions, along with enhancing the Jaguar’s performance and driveability, and some subtle aesthetic backdating. This article will give a thorough breakdown of the transformation process undertaken by our specialist restoration technicians.
Given the Jaguar’s origins in Dubai, improving cabin comfort was a key consideration from the outset. Whilst the Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 is celebrated for its design and driving experience, it was never engineered with extreme climates in mind. High temperatures, combined with limited cabin ventilation and an ageing heater system, can make extended driving in these environments a challenge. To address this issue, we installed a modern air conditioning system, replacing the original heater box with a dual-purpose unit that can deliver both cool and heated air. The cabin can now be effectively cooled, making the Jaguar far more practical for regular driving in the warmer climate, greatly improving usability and driveability for our client. The AC was carefully integrated into the dashboard without visually overpowering the interior.
In addition to the new air conditioning system, as part of the restoration process, we fully rebuilt the rear axle to ensure reliability and consistent performance. Over time, the wear on components such as the bearings and bushings affects drivability, making this an important step in the restoration process. The rear axle was stripped down, and each element of the assembly was carefully assessed, including the bearings, seal, and mounting points. Any components showing signs of wear were replaced. Particular care was taken during reassembly to achieve correct tolerance throughout; this is a critical stage to the axle’s long-term operation.
Another key upgrade we undertook during this Jaguar E-Type restoration was upgrading the braking system to deliver improved stopping performance and greater confidence on the road. At the rear, larger brakes were installed to enhance overall braking capacity and better control in spirited driving. This upgrade helps the Jaguar cope more effectively with modern driving demands, offering improved stability under braking and reduced fade during extended use.
At the front, the suspension was fully stripped down and rebuilt, with particular focus on wear-prone components such as the bearings, bushes and mounting points. Over time, these components can wear and degrade, causing unwanted play in the system, affecting both handling and ride quality. Restoring the front suspension provided more precise steering response and improved stability. Along with restoring the front suspension, we installed uprated front brakes for increased stopping power. Additionally, the new, larger front brakes ensure the braking system performs consistently under load.
Another area of the Series 1.5 E-Type we worked on was replacing and respraying the Jaguar’s engine frames. The tubular front subframe structure carries the engine, front suspension and is bolted to the monocoque tub. The engine frames are critical for the Jaguar’s structural integrity and directly affect the alignment, panel fit, and handling and steering accuracy. Common issues with the original engine subframes include corrosion, fatigue over time, and previous repairs or misalignment. Replacing the frames instead of repairing them can ensure accuracy and provide a better long-term solution for the Jaguar’s structural integrity.
The frames were carefully removed and methodically disassembled whilst protecting the surrounding components and bodywork. The mounting points on the tub were inspected for any hidden issues, and the new, refurbished panels were carefully positioned and trial-fitted before they were secured into place. Ensuring the geometry is correct before fitting is crucial in relation to the engine position, front suspension and bonnet alignment. Before installation, the engine frames were resprayed with the correct colour finish. The high-quality, even coating helps to protect against future corrosion and creates a clean, uniform look.
Produced between 1967 and 1968, the Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 is a transitional model, acting as a bridge between the Series 1 and Series 2 E-Type models. Some of the key characteristics and differences between the Series 1 and 1.5 models include open (uncovered) headlights, and most Series 1.5 models were fitted with a 4.2-litre straight six engine. In addition, the transitional model features rocker-style switches instead of toggles and an updated interior design similar to the forthcoming series 2, which includes a more standardised dashboard layout.
Similar to most Jaguar enthusiasts, our client prefers the Series 1 dashboard layout with more character and charm. Therefore, our client specifically requested to backdate the dashboard to the Series 1 interior design to create that period-correct feel. This involves removing the existing Series 1.5 dashboard components and reworking the dashboard layout to match the early Series 1 configuration. This includes installing the correct switchgear and period-style controls and fittings, along with adjusting the wiring, mounting points and dash panel structure. With the integration of the modern air conditioning system, it creates an additional challenge while backdating the dashboard to ensure the modern upgrades are integrated without disrupting the classic look.
Although the process of integrating older-style components with newer systems can be challenging, our specialist restoration technicians have the skills and experience required to undertake this project. Ensuring that there’s good alignment and spacing of components, consistency in materials and finishes and a great visual balance across the dashboard.
The work carried out on this Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 was guided by a clear and considered approach, with a balanced package that enhances comfort, performance, and reliability without compromising the character of the original design.
