Expanding our services further: Now servicing the Jaguar F-Type

In addition to the Jaguar X100 (XK8 & XKR) and X150 models, which we began offering specialist services for earlier this year, we have also started servicing newer Jaguar models such as the Jaguar F-Type. This Jaguar F-Type has recently been in for a service with our P&K Thornton team at our Nottingham workshops. With nearly six decades of experience and a team of specialists in classic Jaguar service, tuning, and restoration, we are well-equipped to maintain and fine-tune modern Jaguars with the same engineering precision that defines our heritage work.

Produced between 2013 to 2024, the Jaguar F-Type was the successor to the highly popular E-Type, initially available as a convertible and joined by a coupe version in 2013. Made for high performance and responsive handling. The F-Type was initially offered with a supercharged 3.0L V6 engine reaching 160-170+ mph. Jaguar also released other engine variants, including a 5.0 L supercharged V8, reaching speeds between 177 to 186 mph, and they released a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine more recently, which goes from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph. This X152 is a two-door model that is available as either a convertible or a coupé and is made up of a lightweight aluminium body.

Whilst servicing a Jaguar F-Type (especially the high-performance version), there are some key areas to monitor, which include the engine heat system. Many Jaguar F-Type owners report coolant leaks around the water pump and plastic piping, particularly on the V6/V8 supercharged variants, because the plastic piping becomes brittle over time. This can lead to the risk of overheating if the leaks or a faulty water pump go unchecked. Additionally, the timing chain tensioners/guides have been cited as potential failure points. A failing time chain/tensioner can lead to major engine damage; therefore, it’s recommended to confirm that the Jaguar’s service history shows chain and tensioner checks or replacements where necessary.

In addition, some other key areas to monitor include looking for signs of corrosion on the rear differential/underbody of the Jaguar F-Type, particularly in cold and wet climates, along with oil leaks from the rear differential (pinion seal). Also, models equipped with active exhaust valves can seize open or close, which can lead to incorrect sound or exhaust problems. Additionally, electronic glitches can be relatively common. The Jaguar F-Type’s built-in infotainment touchscreen has experienced some problems with freezing, slow response and losing its Bluetooth connection. In addition, some F-Types have also experienced other random electronic faults, in particular from the boot seal and rear-area wiring loom.

As well as servicing F-Types at P&K Thornton Restorations, we’ve recently started completing work for the Jaguar X100 (XK8 & XKR) and X150, along with some newer Jaguar models. We have spent time getting familiar with these models, so we’re now able to offer specialist services for these Jaguars, including metal and electrical work, servicing, tuning, and more.

Some common issues in the Jaguar X100 (XKR & XK8) are that the timing chain tensioners are prone to failure, which could lead to severe engine damage, transmission problems from valve body wear or failure of the torque converter lock-up clutch. Also, look out for suspension wear, rusting issues and cooling system failures. Additionally, some common issues with the X150 are that the water pump is prone to leaks, there can be wear on the suspension components and electrical issues. Along with these, a common issue with both Jaguars is that the mechanisms in the convertible roof can leak or fail.

We have recently seen more Jaguar XK8 and XKR come in for service with us. These models are almost 30 years old and are coming to an age where they might need some metalwork restored, especially around the sills. We are happy to assist with all restoration work for the Jaguar X100 XK8 / XKR and X150.
