Preparations for Mille Miglia Technical Support 2026
For the 2026 Mille Miglia, our P&K Thornton team is providing full technical preparation and support for a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4. We partnered again with The Fast Lane Club to offer a full support package and guaranteed entry to the 1180-mile race. The Aston Martin arrived at our workshops 3 weeks before the event, partially prepared; however, the DB2/4 still requires a lot of work to prepare the classic car for this highly demanding race.
The Mille Miglia is a historic endurance regularity rally spanning approximately 1000 miles across Italy. Originally run as a speed race from 1927 to 1957, it is now a controlled regularity event on closed public roads. The modern event still follows the iconic Brescia–Rome–Brescia route and is widely regarded as the most beautiful race in the world.
Upon collection from the previous preparer and driving it back to our workshop, the car immediately showed significant reliability concerns. The engine severely overheated during the return journey, requiring our team to make multiple stops (approximately six) to manage the temperature and prevent further damage. It became clear to our restoration technicians that the Aston Martin was not yet suitable for endurance use in Mille Miglia conditions.
Once the vehicle arrived at our workshops, a full mechanical assessment was carried out. A head gasket integrity test confirmed that the engine required further work, and a new head gasket needs to be installed. The inspection also highlighted additional areas of concern, including a cooling system inefficiency, combustion sealing issues, potential wear within the valvetrain and brake vibration underload.
We are currently conducting these repairs and installing the required upgrades at our workshops in just a short 3-week time frame. This includes removing the cylinder head to conduct a full inspection and any repairs. A new head gasket is being fitted to restore proper sealing and compression. Whilst the head is off, valve guides are being replaced to improve long-term durability and performance, and we conducted a full inspection of the combustion chambers and mating surfaces. These steps are necessary to ensure the Aston Martin is prepared to sustain high-temperature operation, long-distance endurance driving and stop-start rally conditions, which are typical of Mille Miglia.
In addition, we are upgrading the cooling system by replacing the radiator core to withstand the high temperatures expected in Italy, and we are completing a full system flushing to remove any contaminants, residue, or inefficiencies within the cooling circuit. Other upgrades we are making to the Aston Martin include improvements to the brake system and further preparations to the electrical system. During our initial road use, excessive vibration was identified in the front brake drums; to address this, the brakes are being rebalanced to improve braking stability during long descents and increase safety and control in competitive rally conditions. To improve the electrical system, we are conducting a full inspection to ensure reliability, and we are wiring and installing spotlights to ensure consistent power delivery to auxiliary lighting systems.
Following workshop work, the vehicle will undergo extended road testing. Road testing will focus on engine temperature stability under load, brake performance consistency, electrical system reliability under vibration and general drivability and endurance behaviour. Any issues identified during testing will be addressed before final race preparation.
Our preparation approach is heavily informed by our experience at Mille Miglia 2025, where we provided full technical support for an Austin Healey 100S. Last year's experience highlighted some key challenges, including extreme ambient temperatures (up to 35°C), long driving days with limited service access and on-road servicing requirements in remote locations. We successfully supported the Austin Healey 100S, which crossed the finish line on day 5. This experience gave us valuable insight into real-world failure points under Mille Miglia conditions, the importance of pre-emptive reliability upgrades and efficient roadside repair strategies.
Alongside technical preparation, we are offering a fully managed Mille Miglia 2026 support package, which includes vehicle entry management and coordination, transport logistics to and from Italy, full technical support throughout the event, administrative and licensing support, and so much more to provide a seamless, stress-free experience.
As the 2026 Mille Miglia approaches, preparation work on the Aston Martin DB2/4 continues at our workshops. Drawing on our previous Mille Miglia experience and restoration expertise, our team is committed to ensuring the car is fully prepared for the demands of this iconic endurance event.
